Signs and Symptoms
Some new mothers experience postpartum OCD, also referred to as postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is a form of anxiety disorder that is characterized by distressing or terrifying intrusive and obsessive thoughts or visions.
Up to 3% of new mothers experience postpartum OCD, therefore it's critical to be aware of the warning signs and symptoms so the mother can obtain the care and assistance she needs.
The signs and symptoms of postpartum OCD may include:
Obsessive thoughts:
These are intrusive thoughts that come repeatedly and involuntarily, such as thoughts about harming the baby or thoughts about the baby being hurt.
Compulsive behaviors:
These are repetitive behaviors that the mother feels compelled to perform to alleviate anxiety or distress, such as excessive cleaning or checking on the baby multiple times.
Avoidance behaviors:
These are behaviors that the mother may engage in to avoid situations that trigger her anxiety or distress.
Constant worry or fear:
This can include irrational fears about the baby's health or safety.
Feeling out of control:
Mothers with postpartum OCD may feel like they cannot control their thoughts or behaviors, which can be very distressing.
Postpartum OCD is a condition that affects some new mothers. The signs and symptoms can be distressing, but with proper treatment and support, recovery is possible. Partners can play a critical role in supporting their loved ones through this challenging time. Remember to listen without judgment, provide reassurance, encourage treatment, help with household chores, and be patient and understanding.
