Understanding Postpartum Depression
Signs & Symptoms to Look For
Some women have postpartum depression, a form of mood illness, after having birth. Feelings of despair, hopelessness, and a lack of interest in once-enjoyable activities are its hallmarks. These are some indications of postpartum depression:
Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and emptiness:
A new mother may experience persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness, and may cry for no apparent reason.
Lack of interest in activities:
They may lose interest in activities that they used to enjoy, including spending time with family and friends.
Fatigue and sleep disturbances:
They may experience insomnia, difficulty sleeping even when the baby is sleeping, or excessive sleeping.
Changes in appetite:
They may experience changes in appetite, either eating too much or too little, and sudden weight changes.
Difficulty bonding with the baby:
They may have difficulty bonding with the baby or feel detached from the baby.
Irritability and anger:
They may be easily irritated, agitated, or have anger outbursts, and may feel like they are not themselves.
Suicidal thoughts or behaviors:
In severe cases, they may have suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
It's important to seek help from a healthcare provider if you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms. Postpartum depression can be treated with therapy, medication, or a combination of both. With appropriate treatment, most women can recover and enjoy motherhood.
