Pregnant? Planning a hospital birth?
What to Expect
Are you pregnant and planning a hospital birth? Congratulations! You're about to embark on an amazing journey that will ultimately bring you the greatest gift of all - your sweet baby. But let's face it, there are some parts of hospital birth that aren't exactly sunshine and rainbows. So, what should you expect during a hospital birth? Let's break it down.
Think of triage as a necessary evil. Yes, you have to sign a bunch of paperwork, take blood, and get hooked up to monitors. But don't worry, you can wear whatever comfy gown you want! And who needs those compression socks? Fashion is overrated, baby.
Laboring in your room: Depending on your hospital, you might have some freedom to move around during labor. If you're lucky, you'll have access to a shower or a birth ball. Why not put on some relaxing tunes to help you get in the mindset of giving birth? Whether it's Worship or Beyonce, find what works for you and let the music soothe you through the contractions.
Epidural: Ahh, the epidural. A blessing or a curse? That's for you to decide. Just know that once you get that magic juice, you won't be able to move around much. But it can give you much-needed relief and rest. Your doula can also help you find positions to rest in that still encourage baby to move down.
Pushing: This is the moment you've been waiting for! But wait, why do they want you on your back with your legs in stirrups? That's not exactly the most efficient way to push out a baby. Don't worry, some care providers are open to alternative positions. You might end up pushing on all fours, in a squat, or even doing a little dance. Just make sure you don't accidentally kick your partner in the face.
Immediately postpartum: Congratulations, you did it! But wait, there's more. Your care provider can't leave the room until the placenta is born and you've been checked for any tears or bleeding. Meanwhile, your baby might get whisked away to the warmer for a quick exam. Just lay back, relax, and enjoy your new baby.
Golden Hour: This is the time when you and your baby get to bond and start breastfeeding. It's also when you'll be checked for bleeding and offered some snacks. Can't decide between apple or orange juice? Go ahead and take both, you deserve it.
Cesarean: Sometimes things don't go according to plan, and you might end up having a cesarean. That's okay, it's still a birth! Just expect to have some extra help during recovery and maybe a cool scar to show off.
Hire a doula: Want to make your hospital birth experience a little smoother? Hire a doula! Not only can she provide emotional support and guide you through your options, but she can also bring snacks and a free hot water bottle. What more could you ask for?
Hospital birth is an adventure that comes with its own set of quirks and challenges. But with a little humor and a lot of snacks, you'll make it through just fine. So go ahead, embrace the hospital ambiance, and enjoy the ride.
